Mosquito-borne diseases are a looming threat, new LED based solution reshapes repellent tech

Posted

The world is weary from mosquito carried ailments, and Israel is no exception. While traditional chemical and lighting repellents carry a variety of disadvantages, the new LED-based solution offers more with less risk. This solution offers a safe and highly effective mosquito-repellent effect by leveraging a specific light spectrum. By utilizing LED spectral illumination technology, a golden yellow LED repels these sting critters by using their natural avoidance of specific wavelengths.

The experience with Mosquitoes is never good. Worldwide, mosquito-borne diseases are frequent, and varied. Such as Chikungunya, West Nile Fever and Dengue Fever. The situation in Israel is of no exception. Only this past August, there were three confirmed cases of West Nile Fever. Additionally, The Israeli Ministry of Environmental  Protection issued a warning regarding the spread of the infected mosquitoes from northern Israel to it’s more central areas. in correlation, in 2024 alone there were 930 confirmed cases of infection and an additional 73 cases of deaths as a result in Israel. In parallel, seven cases of Dengue fever were diagnosed in Israel in that same timeframe. Thus, making the fear from a widespread outbreak in the country understandable.

The situation is further complexed as traditional chemical repellents face a three-fold “obstacles” to overcome: drug resistance, environmental pollution, and neurotoxicity. Studies show that 83% of mosquito populations across the globe are resistant to mainstream pyrethroids. In addition,  the respiratory exposure risk by such chemical solutions for infants is 2.3 times higher than adults. A new solution for mosquito deterrent is needed. For that end, a new Light Emitting Diode (LED) based solution has been designed and produced.

At its core the principles of “No toxins, no odor, no irritation” (namely, safe for infants), “No noise, no disturbance” (silent as can be operability) and “No risk, no radiation” (nuanced, controlled wavelengths, safe for pets and multi-aged humans alike). Making this solution a “three wins” solution versus the “three problems” of the traditional approach. E.D.E. Electronics is proud to present the Golden Yellow LED solution specifically designed to repel the mosquito kind. The brainchild of groundbreaking illumination visionary Refond Optoelectronics, this solution utilizes a specific wavelength spectrum (530–590 nm) that mosquitoes naturally avoid. As a result, Golden Yellow LEDs reduce mosquito aggregation risk at the source.

Plainly, this reliability driven LED technology enables an enhanced and efficient repellence effect, while supporting the prevention of vector-borne diseases. This solutions family is highly appliable and neatly suited for seamless integration in mosquito repellent commodities and solutions. Pure and simple, these solutions offer soft, eye-safe light with no blue-light hazard. Combining mosquito repellence with healthy illumination.

Already adopted by leading lighting companies, this solution covers three key application scenarios: residential, outdoor, and commercial lighting. This splendid anti-mosquito capability is highly customizable, highly varied in terms of packaging and is operational in a power consumption ranging from 0.1W to 10W. Exceptionally adhering to the needs of the world.

For example, an estimated 390 million dengue infections occur annually worldwide. In parallel, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued this past year new guidelines to support healthcare providers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed arboviral diseases. Marking the first time the WHO has published global guidelines that cover together Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika and Yellow fever diseases.
